Community Legal Centres are independent community organisations providing free legal advice and information as well as legal education for individuals and communities across NSW. We promote human rights and advocate for a fair and non-discriminatory legal justice system.

There are 39 Community Legal Centres in NSW. Anyone needing legal advice or assistance that cannot afford the services of a private solicitor can contact a CLC. Interpreters can be arranged and all client information is strictly confidential.

Generalist Community Legal Centres

Generalist CLCs are Centres which offer legal advice and assistance on a wide range of common legal problems to people living in their catchment area. Generalist centres provide confidential legal advice and assistance on a range of issues including:

Accidents and compensation, Apprehended Violence Orders (AVOs), Banking and Finance, Children and Young People, Consumer rights, Crime, Employment, Environment, Family Law and Relationships, Housing, Property and Development, Human Rights, Immigration and Citizenship, Neighbours, Social Services, Transport, Health and Wills and Estates.

LawAccess NSW is a free government telephone service that provides legal information, advice and referrals for people who have a legal problem in NSW. If you are going to court, have a legal problem or have a question about the law LawAccess can help you get the assistance you need. Ph: 1300 888 529

Legal Aid is a Government legal service dealing mainly with family law and criminal legal matters. They provide free legal advice as well as court representation, and grants of legal aid funds to pay for a Legal Aid lawyer or a private solicitor. Whether you can get Legal Aid depends on the type of legal problem you have and your income. If you are not sure whether you will get Legal Aid the Customer Service Officers at LawAccess can help you work out whether Legal Aid may be available and assist you to fill out the Legal Aid application form. Legal Aid Hotline for Under 18s Provides telephone legal advice for young people facing criminal charges, 9am-midnight Monday-Friday, and 12 noon-midnight on the weekends. Ph: 1800 10 18 10


Community Justice Centres provide a quick, and impartial dispute resolution services for minor matters e.g. neighborhood disputes. All mediations are conducted by accredited community mediators. Ph: 02 9228 7455


Anti-Discrimination Board investigates complaints of discrimination, harassment and vilification. The Board does not take sides but tries to help both parties involved come to an agreement about how the problem can be resolved. Ph: 1800 670 812

Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has responsibilities for inquiring into alleged discrimination on the grounds of race, colour or ethnic origin, racial vilification, sex, sexual harassment, marital status, pregnancy, or disability. Ph: 1300 369 711

NSW Ombudsman’s Office investigates complaints about the conduct of NSW government agencies and departments and their employees, as well as some non-government agencies. Ph: 1800 451 524

Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited (ALS) is a community-controlled organization responsible for providing legal aid services to Aboriginal people in NSW and the ACT. The ALS has approximately 24 offices across NSW and the ACT from which it provides legal advice, referral and casework assistance in the fields of Criminal and Family Law (including Care and Protection). ALS also provides advice on Civil Law matters from some of its offices. Ph: 02 9318 2122


The Solicitor Referral Service of the Law Society of New South Wales helps members of the public find a private firm of solicitors or accredited specialists in specific areas of law. The Solicitor Referral Service pivots around a unique referral database of more than 1,400 law firms which enables the enquiry officers to refer clients who can pay for legal services to appropriate law firms. Office of the Legal Services Commissioner receives all complaints about solicitors, barristers and licensed conveyancers in New South Wales. The OLSC also oversees the investigation of complaints about the conduct of practitioners and plays a major role in resolving consumer disputes. Ph: 1800 242 958 Email olsc@agd.nsw.gov.au

Family Relationship Centres are a first port of call when families want information about relationship and separation issues. Through information and referral the Centres help families strengthen relationships and deal with relationship difficulties. Where families separate, the centres provide information, advice and dispute resolution (such as mediation) to help them reach agreement on parenting arrangements without going to court.

The National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) is the peak organisation representing community legal centres in Australia. It is a federated structure. Its members are the state and territory associations. Together, these organisations represent around 200 community legal centres nationally.
